Working for NEBDN as an Associate

This month we hear from Wayne Thomas, Dental Nurse at The University Dental Hospital of Manchester, to share his experience from trainee dental nurse to working as an Associate Examiner for NEBDN.

My association with NEBDN goes back a long way. It started back in 2010, when I began my journey as a trainee dental nurse. I studied at the Dental Team Education Centre (DTEC), based at King’s College Hospital in London. I had the choice of either the NVQ Level 3 in Dental Nursing or the NEBDN National Diploma. NEBDN has an excellent reputation, and the course was highly recommended, so I chose the National Diploma. I am glad to say this was the correct choice for my career, in the short and long-term.

The training and experience gained during my two years at King’s, gave me the skills needed to become the dental nurse I am today. I was working four days a week in the Dental Institute at King’s, rotating around the different dental departments every four weeks. The practical experience this gave me was invaluable. Treating patients in real time helped me learn the practical skills I would need, improved my communication skills dramatically, and gave me the confidence that I could do this as a career. I also had one day of classroom time every week, where I was taught the syllabus to prepare for the written exam, given materials to practice the manual skills of dental nursing, and given time to write up assessments for my Record of Experience (RoE). My tutor for the National Diploma was Rebecca Cox. She is a training coordinator at the DTEC and a Trustee for NEBDN. Rebecca was my first mentor, she helped me really buckle down with my studies and was very supportive in getting my RoE submitted on time. Her dedication and passion for dental nursing, and her incredible work ethic, was a real inspiration to me and definitely had a big influence on my career. All the knowledge and skills I had gained from my training, as well as the help and support from everyone involved with the course helped me and I managed to pass.

After I had been at King’s for two years and my training course had finished, I was a newly qualified dental nurse ready to get down to work. I had the option of finding a job in an NHS or private practice, but I was desperate to continue working in the hospital setting. However, there weren’t any jobs available at the time. Being unemployed for an extended period was not an option for me, so I found a job in practice. However, I missed the atmosphere of working in a hospital, the camaraderie with many people in different departments working in the same building. I missed the different types of patients and treatments that you get in the hospital setting. Luckily after a few months, I managed to get a job back at the hospital where it all started — King’s College Hospital.

My new role was not initially based at the hospital. Community Special Care Dentistry is a service that provides dental treatment at community-based health centres and sites in South London, for patients whom treatment by a general dental practice is unsuitable. These included people who have additional needs, complex medical conditions, severe mental health conditions and severe anxiety/phobia. Now my work was so much more than dealing with dental problems. We had to manage the logistics of treating a patient in an electric wheelchair. We had to be aware of our patient’s underlying medical conditions and be ready to act swiftly in the event of a medical emergency. It was sometimes a challenge to get some of our patients to sit in the dental chair.

Providing care to patients who are unable to access a dentist is the most rewarding aspect of Community dentistry. We treated patients at their homes, including care homes and assisted living facilities. Many of these patients had dementia or physical disabilities, they would have struggled to get help without our service. We also had a mobile dental unit to provide dental examinations and treatment at special needs schools, psychiatric hospitals and homeless shelters. Working in Community has been the most enjoyable and rewarding chapter of my career so far. I have helped the people in society who need it the most, and I’ve worked with amazing people. Community dentistry is unique. It requires a special blend of compassion, empathy and hard work.

I started working with NEBDN in 2014, helping out with the OSCEs, because I was excited to be involved in the process of producing the next generation of dental nurses. The exams ran twice a year over two days, and in multiple cities all around the country. I was recruited by Rebecca Cox, who was a Super Coordinator for NEBDN at the time. My job was to reset the OSCE stations after a candidate had finished, ready for the next candidate. The work was taken very seriously, but I had a lot of fun and had the chance to meet new people and network with dental professionals from all over the country, which was a great opportunity.

In 2016, I applied to become an Associate Examiner for NEBDN. My application was successful, and I was invited to an Examiner training workshop. The main objective was to learn how to assess candidates correctly. I watched video footage of previous OSCEs, marked the candidates using specific criteria, and received feedback on my assessment of their performance. The idea is to be objective, accurate, fair and consistent when evaluating a candidate’s performance. Prior to each OSCE, examiners are required to perform a standardisation exercise. This is to ensure that the strict marking criteria is followed so that all candidates are assessed consistently. Although NEBDN’s exams have now moved online, the role of the Associate Examiner is still crucial to the OSCE exams, as it still involves all the above just via an online platform.

I have examined for NEBDN many times since 2016 and there are always plenty of nerves, and some tears, from the candidates throughout the process, as it means so much to them, but as an examiner I must maintain calmness, professionalism and objectivity. The majority of the candidates do amazingly well which makes me so proud, and I can honestly say it’s the most enjoyable experience. I love it.

NEBDN has provided high-calibre qualifications for many years which is one of the reasons I chose to work with them over other Awarding Organisations. I have completed two NEBDN qualifications and the knowledge and skills I needed to complete these courses was extensive, and thoroughly prepared me for my role as a dental nurse. NEBDN is staffed with professionals who are dedicated and passionate about the development of dental nurses, and I share this drive to be involved in the future of the profession.

As a male in a female dominated profession, I feel this has been of benefit in my journey as a dental nurse. I have sometimes been able to connect to patients in a different way to some of my other colleagues. I have worked with children and younger people, and I feel that I have been an example of doing what you love, regardless of gender, race or any other perceived barriers.

  • Spotlight on The School of Dental Nursing and Technology – Leeds Dental Institute

Spotlight on The School of Dental Nursing and Technology – Leeds Dental Institute

This month we hear from Ellen Davison, Manager of Dental Nursing and Technology at Leeds Dental Institute, to share her experience working as a course provider for NEBDN whilst navigating through a global pandemic. Ellen shares information on how Leeds Dental Institute run their courses and how they operate a successful business.

Ellen has successfully worked at Leeds Dental Institute for 32 years and has kindly written this article for NEBDN, to share her journey with other industry professionals. Read below:

The School of Dental Nursing has been training dental nurses since 1956. In 2015, the School of Dental Nursing and School of Dental Technology combined to form one joint school to become the School of Dental Nursing and Technology – Leeds Dental Institute, which currently delivers training to well over a hundred dental nurses and technicians a year. The joining of the two schools has meant that we and our learners benefit from the expertise of the two disciplines, and we are able to collaborate and share expert knowledge and skills, to enable a greater understanding of the differing roles within dentistry.

Our aim is to provide well trained, dynamic, and inspired dental care professionals who take real value from their training and will go on to deliver quality, patient centred care to the wider Yorkshire and Humber region.

Leeds Dental Institute is part of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and is committed to delivering the highest quality and safest treatment and care to every patient, with a vision to be the best for specialist and integrated care within the region. As a team, The School of Dental Nursing and Technology is responsible for delivering the pre-registration NEBDN National Diploma in Dental Nursing to dental nurses in general dental practice.

The school has been an accredited course provider since the early 80’s delivering NEBDN qualifications, and in our experience, dental practices understand and value the qualifications NEBDN offer.

The school also offers post-registration NEBDN qualifications in Oral Health Education, Sedation Dental Nursing, Orthodontic Dental Nursing and Fluoride Varnish Application.

The communication and service we receive from NEBDN is excellent, knowing that we can talk to someone is invaluable. Our auditor, Sandra, is so helpful and always there to support us along with the customer support staff who we know by name!

The school is, and always has been, passionate about supporting the career progression of dental nurses and with an experienced team of tutors and assessors, we understand the importance that NEBDN has in supporting the development of dental nursing career pathways. We work closely with them to improve the lives of dental nurses by providing industry approved qualifications.

During 2020, training providers had to quickly adjust their educational provision to accommodate the lockdown measures enforced throughout the pandemic, which meant like many other organisations, the delivery of face-to-face teaching had to change, and we had to adapt by implementing a range of technological applications that would offer the best support to learners. The School of Dental Nursing and Technology rose to the challenge that Covid-19 presented to the delivery of dental education and has rapidly enhanced all training programmes with technology assisted learning environments that support the dental nurses and trainee dental technicians to continue the development of their skills and knowledge, with minimal interruption to their training to complete their qualifications. The school has quickly developed their blended learning methodology that now covers both pre- and post-registration qualification courses, creating an online environment which is both stimulating and rewarding for learners, and they have transitioned well to this new method of blended learning –

NEBDN’s change to online exams has helped facilitate this new method.

We actively support course provider networking events, national conferences and have been involved in the different qualification committees as committee members and chair.

We’re looking forward to the exciting times ahead with Ofqual recognition and hopefully an apprenticeship offering.

  • NEBDN celebrates a year of going green whilst working from home

NEBDN celebrates a year of going green whilst working from home

The National Examining Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN), celebrate their 1-year milestone working remotely, following the ongoing global pandemic COVID-19. Since the national lockdown in March 2020, NEBDN has introduced new systems and processes to support the delivery of online examinations and has successfully managed to reduce its environmental footprint by working from home. So far, the Lancashire-based Charity has reduced its carbon footprint by 34 tonnes, which is enough Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions to heat a house for 23 years. NEBDN has improved new ways of working and reduced unnecessary pollutions by decreasing paper usage, travel consumption and facilitating new operational methods; by switching to online meetings, digital storage systems and online assessments.

Over the last year, NEBDN has made positive ‘green’ changes by providing staff members with reusable water bottles, recycling food and drink items, moving paper expenses to an online app, producing digital content and online tickets for events, and integrating new online software solutions to enable staff to send documents and video chat via a secure Cloud-based server, making paper minutes something of the past.

Since working remotely, NEBDN has saved a total of 131,000 travel miles, 110 sacks of confidential paper waste, and facilitated the success of 4,727 candidates sitting an online written or Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE) exam. This is a record for the most candidates sitting a dental nursing OSCE, which is a robust assessment method unique to NEBDN.

Since July 2020, NEBDN issued six online exams, saving the equivalent of 160,830 sheets of paper or 16 pine trees.

Kate Kerslake, CEO at NEBDN, commented: “As the CEO at NEBDN I’m incredibly proud of all that we’ve achieved over the year. Our team has continued to support its Course Providers in the teaching of our qualifications and support trainee and qualified Dental Nurses with their professional development during these very challenging times. Our commitment to creating a safe and robust online assessment method was developed over months not years, which is a true testament to the team and our operational staff.

“We understand costs of working from home affect the environment too, however a positive outcome of COVID-19 has been the immense reduction of travel for our Staff and “Trustees, and the amount of paper usage from facilitating exams. This has shown us how innovative and forward-thinking we can be, and as part of our ‘Going Green’ campaign this is something we plan to sustain throughout future years, as we continue to work towards creating a greener environment.”

NEBDN’s ‘Going Green’ campaign is a continued initiative to make positive environmental changes to lower its carbon emissions and generate greener solutions by utilising online platforms and lowering print and travel plans over the coming years, hosting more meetings virtually and looking at ways in which they safely recycle products. NEBDN is part of an Environmental Accomplishment recycling programme through one of its suppliers.

NEBDN is an Awarding Organisation and registered Charity based in Preston, Lancashire, delivering qualifications in both Pre-Registration and Post-Registration areas for dental nurses in the UK. NEBDN has been examining and awarding dental nursing qualifications for over 75 years and work alongside a network of 140+ accredited professionals to teach the students.

NEBDN continue to make changes to reduce emissions from remote working where possible and will continue to challenge itself in striving to be a more sustainable organisation.

  • When will I receive my certificate?

When will I receive my certificate?

We know how exciting it is for candidates to have completed an exam and be awarded a certificate as part of their achievement, so we apologise for any disappointment we have caused if you have not yet received yours.

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, our office remains closed (since March 2020) and all our staff are working remotely from home, therefore staff can’t facilitate printing and sending certificates from the office within the usual timeframe. This includes priority service replacement certificates – these are also currently unavailable.

We understand how frustrating this news may be, however the safety of our staff is very important to us and following the government guidelines we must ensure a COVID safe working environment.

Our team is accommodating certificate requests as soon as possible under the circumstances and we ask that you kindly be patient as we work through the backlog whilst facilitating the online exams.

For National Diploma candidates, NEBDN has agreed with the General Dental Council that for this examination you will not need the physical certificate to apply to join the register. The GDC are aware of all candidates who are eligible to apply for registration.

As soon as our office re-opens and we can go back to ‘normal’ you’ll be the first to know.

    Thank you for your support.

  • Upcoming changes to OSCE exams 2021/22

Upcoming changes to OSCE exams 2021/22

Since July last year, we made some changes to our examination timetable to assist students with completing their studies. NEBDN has been working hard to ensure it can continue to support trainee and qualified dental nurses with their professional development during these very challenging, and often uncertain times, as we continue to monitor the Government guidance on tier restrictions and lockdown measures. Our key focus remains to continue to provide students and course providers with as much stability and information as possible, to provide a workable solution with minimal disruption to the services we can provide.

Therefore, all exams including the upcoming June and January 2022 OSCEs, will now be online for the next business year to February 2021/22, alongside all written exams which will now remain online permanently.

Save the date – upcoming online exam series 2021/22:

    National Diploma OSCE exam 2021:
    20-29 January 2021

    Post-Registration written exam 2021:
    12 March 2021

    National Diploma written exam 2021:
    10 April 2021

    National Diploma OSCE exam 2021:
    Dates TBC June 2021

    Post-Registration written exam 2021:
    Dates TBC September 2021

    National Diploma written exam 2021:
    5 November 2021

    National Diploma OSCE exam 2022:
    Dates TBC January 2022

This communication follows on from our October 2020 update, where we communicated to our stakeholders that all written exams would remain online for the foreseeable future, which left the OSCE exams to be considered – as this is a much bigger operational process for our team.

We are pleased to report that after six months of successful online exam deliveries in Post-Registration and National Diploma exams, 89% passed the online OSCE exam, which is the second highest pass rate since 2018 and a testament to the hard work of our course providers and their students.

We appreciate that some students may be apprehensive about the online exams and may have deferred hoping for a face to face OSCE exam, however our priority is ensuring a safe assessment method is given to the students sitting their exam, and given the challenging times we continue to face, we feel this provides more certainty and allows the students a chance to complete their studies.

If you are sitting an upcoming exam and have any questions, please speak to your course provider who will be able to help you.

  • Special Recognition Awards 2020 – our winners announced

Special Recognition Awards 2020 – our winners announced

Earlier this year in August, we opened our annual Special Recognition Awards (SRAs) for individuals who have demonstrated dedication, outstanding service and commitment to NEBDN and/or the education and training of dental nurses, through involvement and achievement at a national or UK level.

Following a shortlist, we are excited to announce the winners of the 2020 SRAs are:

Marie Parker – Former Chair at NEBDN (2013-2017)

Susan Wright – Associate Examiner and Committee member at NEBDN

Fiona Ellwood – Founder and Patron of the Society of British Dental Nurses

Margaret Stout – Retired Dental Nurse and former literary advisor to Mr Henry Levison, author of Levison’s Textbook for Dental Nurses.

We would like to take this opportunity to recognise four worthy recipients of NEBDN’s Special Recognition Awards for 2020. These awards are allocated across three categories and this is an exceptional year as we have two awards in the Contribution to Dental Nurse Education and Training category.

Marie Parker – Contribution to NEBDN category

Marie qualified as a Dental Nurse in 1994 and has worked in NHS hospitals and general and private dental practices. Marie has achieved Post Certification, Teaching and Management qualifications, including a Masters degree in education to help her develop and influence the status of dental nurses on a national basis.

Marie joined NEBDN in 2001 as an Examiner for the National Certificate and the Certificate in Oral Health Education (OHE). She joined the OHE committee and went on to chair this committee for several years before becoming a Trustee. As a member of the Finance Committee, she was instrumental in the appointment of new accountants to better serve the needs of NEBDN. She led the Business Improvement Group that was responsible for the development of the new Fluoride Varnish Course and encouraged more use of market research to inform Board strategy.

In the role of Chair of the Board from 2013 to 2017 she developed strong governance for NEBDN and an active and committed Board team achieving many changes which have prepared the organisation for its developing journey as an Awarding body. Marie has a passion to improve the education and training for Dental Nurses and has been committed to NEBDN’s vision and values, to continue to develop qualifications that meet the needs of tomorrow’s dental nurse.

Susan Wright – Contribution to Dental Nursing developments category

Susan has been involved with the teaching and IQA work for Dental Nurse courses for many years and continues to support and improve the function of NEBDN. Susan is a valued Associate Examiner and Committee member at NEBDN and draws her contributions from her many years of knowledge and experience as both a Dental Nurse and a Practice Manager.

Fiona Ellwood – Contribution to Dental Nurse education and training category

Fiona is the founder and patron of the Society of British Dental Nurses and has helped to develop and support the teaching of teams and individual educators as well as professional development. Her work spans across all four nations.

Fiona was a provider of NEBDN qualifications for many years both prior to and post mandatory registration, was an examiner for NEBDN’s registrable qualification, the oral health education qualification and was part of the early work in the transition to the more current NEBDN qualification. We know how proud she is to hold the NEBDN qualification herself.

Fiona holds many educational appointments both at the Royal Colleges and across the sector as well as dental nursing and is an External Examiner on a BSc Dental Nurse programme. She was the first Dental Care Professional to receive an Honorary Fellowship from the FGDP (uk) and one of the first to receive a Fellowship of the Dental Trainers Faculty at Royal College Surgeons (RCS) Edinburgh and is currently a member of the RCS Edinburgh Dental Education Advisory Board. Fiona is passionate about quality assurance in education and as such she was appointed as an education inspector for the General Dental Council.

Margaret Stout – Contribution to Dental Nurse education and training category

Margaret is responsible for inspiring Mr Henry Levison to write his Textbook for Dental Nurses – first published in 1960 and it is now published in its 12th edition, in many countries.

Margaret worked with the service and Mr Levison for five years and her dedication to the job and the patients never waned. Margaret’s enthusiastic presence within the small dental team of which she was such a large part, led to the publication of the first and enduring Textbook for Dental Nurses.

After a long and illustrious career, it’s no surprise that in the 9th edition of his textbook, Henry Levison wrote her a personal message; To Margaret, the best of all my nurses.

We would like to thank all our winners and nominees for the outstanding hard work you have provided to NEBDN and look forward to the next round of nominations in 2021.

Due to COVID-19 we are recognising our winners virtually this year and have posted an official NEBDN award and letter via postal service to show our gratitude.

NEBDN launches new qualification in Fluoride Varnish Application

The National Examining Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN) launches a new online Post-Registration qualification in Fluoride Varnish Application this November 2020. The qualification is the first of its kind at NEBDN to be Record of Competence (RoC) based only, with on-demand registration and award on achievement; allowing course providers and students to work to their own schedule. The much-anticipated qualification follows as part of NEBDN’s Vision statement and development as an awarding organisation.

The qualification provides dental nurses with an educational experience in knowledge, critical understanding, intellectual skills, practical skills and personal attitude. This will enable them to provide effective fluoride varnish application within a community-based programme and/or on prescription from a dentist or as part of a structured dental health programme.

Oral Health Education (OHE) courses are popular across the UK and is the most searched for Post-Registration qualification on NEBDN’s website. With pass rates of over 70% from previous oral health exams, this qualification goes hand in hand with fluoride varnish application, as together they enable dental care professionals to support the wider dental team and to provide direct preventive care to some of the most vulnerable groups of patients.

Kate Kerslake, CEO at NEBDN, commented: “NEBDN aims to be at the forefront of dental nursing education and development, which is why we have released a new qualification in Fluoride Varnish Application, adding to our diverse range of Post-Registration courses this year. It not only gives course providers the flexibility to support students without meeting exam deadlines, but gives students the opportunity to complete the portfolio-based qualification in their own time, which helps minimise any disruptions to travel and personal circumstances/commitments, especially during the times we find ourselves in.”

NEBDN is accepting new applications for accreditation from 1 November 2020, which means new practices or learning centres will be able to offer this course once accredited in addition to others they may offer at present, and feature on NEBDN’s course provider search list. Currently NEBDN has six course providers offering this qualification. The statistics show over 2,000 students use the search bar each month to find an NEBDN qualification.

The key features of this qualification are:

    -New vocational qualification

    -Online portfolio RoC based only

    -No written exam

-On-demand registration and award on achievement – no need to work around NEBDN’s schedule

-£95 course fee to NEBDN (other Post-Registration qualifications are £195)

-No accreditation fee for existing course providers (£500 for new applicants)

-Featured on our course provider search list

NEBDN’s long-standing reputation outweighs many competitors, with over 75 years of providing dental nursing qualifications in both pre-registration and post-registration areas, adding to the four benefits of choosing an NEBDN accredited course:

    1. We don’t charge any hidden fees or incentives, because our vision is to support the education and development of dental nurses in the UK.

    2. All students who successfully pass their qualifications are awarded certificates of completion as opposed to certificates of attendance which are of different relevance.

    3. Holding accreditation for delivery of qualifications indicates that the standards for education, policies, process and procedures in place, highlight an effective quality management system which is the core foundation of a course provider.

    4. An accredited qualification could be more favourable with employers who are aware of the standards required to achieve qualification.

The new qualification is the first NEBDN accredited course in this subject area and acts as a natural progression for those who have undertaken NEBDN’s OHE qualification, or it can be taken as a stand-alone qualification without having to hold the OHE qualification prior to registration.

If you are an employer interested in running this course, please email accreditation@nebdn.org to register your interest and one of our team members will be in touch.
